A major figure in Canadian literature, writer and critic Robert Kroetsch is the author of nine novels and several volumes of poetry among which the influential Completed Field Notes (1989).

Over the last thirty years; his essays have explored the Canadian literary scene along whimsical paths, sharing with the reader sudden, uncompromising illuminations in The Lovely Treachery of Words (1989) and A Likely Story The Writing Life (1995).

This interview was filmed during the conference on the notion of territory in Canada held at the Université Toulouse II-Le Mirail in June 1999. Robert Kroetsch reads from his long poem Seed Catalogue, then discusses his experience as a novelist and poet born on homestead in rural Alberta. He explains the challenge and seduction of the Canadian Prairies, the use of distinct literary forms to address their specificity. Kroetsch speaks for a form oh writing that will not content itself with reflecting an outside reality but will strive through sound and touch and cadence to ease the reader into the world.
